Explore the essentials, from understanding paintbrushes, mediums, and palettes to discovering a variety of painting surfaces. Dive into different painting techniques, such as glazes and alla prima, and cover crucial aspects like underpainting, mark-making, and colour theory.
This course welcomes absolute beginners who are eager to explore the vibrant world of acrylic painting. No prior painting experience is required. If you have a passion for art and a desire to unleash your creativity, this workshop is perfect for you.
Mediums and Palettes: Explore the diverse range of acrylic mediums and palettes, understanding their impact on texture and colour blending.
Surface Exploration: Discover the versatility of painting surfaces, from
canvas to paper, and experiment with their unique characteristics.
Techniques: Understand the techniques of glazes and alla prima, unlocking the potential for layered and spontaneous creations.
Underpainting Fundamentals: Delve into the importance of underpainting, laying the groundwork for vibrant and dynamic artworks.
Colour Theory: Explore the fundamentals of colour theory, learning how to mix and harmonise colours for impactful compositions.
All materials provided
Suitable for ages 16+
Refreshments will be available throughout the morning but lunch is not provided.
No experience necessary. This workshop is perfect for beginners.
Please bring old clothes or an apron - painting can get messy!
Long stay parking is available a short walk from the studio (Craft Centre Car Park: Open 7am – 7pm, parking charges apply, please bring cash)
Cancellation Policy: Payments are not refundable but are transferable. Please give 2 weeks notice if you wish to transfer to a different date. I will always try my hardest to honour a workshop, but if for any reason the workshop has to be postponed (i.e. a global pandemic!), you will be offered the option of a full refund.

Textiles Illustration

Textiles is a versatile medium, great for creating artwork as well as embellishing home furnishings and clothing. In this workshop you will learn to use appliqué, basic embroidery stitches and beading to create your own decorative fabric cupcake illustration.

Pointillism in Acrylics

Pointillism is defined by its use of mark making and colour. Pointillism paintings are created from hundreds of dots of carefully placed pure colours, relying on the eye to mix the colours to achieve maximum luminosity, in a similar way to pixels on a screen.
Learn how to use reds, blues and yellows to create the whole spectrum of colours. In this workshop we will look at basic colour theory, pigment strength and colour mixing before going on to create a colourful acrylic painting to take away with you.

Get started with Oil Paints

Starting out with Oils can be a daunting prospect, but with just a few basics you can unlock the potential of this rich and exciting medium.
In this beginners workshop we will be getting to grips with oil painting. You will gain understanding of the paints, learn about colour mixing and basic application techniques, and receive step-by-step guidance in creating your own still life painting.

Mastering Reflections | Large Scale Charcoal Drawing

In this workshop we will be getting messy with large-scale charcoal drawings.
Working at A1 in scale we will be looking at reflection and the refraction of light on glass as well studying the way in which glass objects interact with positive and negative space.
