During the day, you will explore a range of different printmaking plates, including traditional lino, soft cut lino and Japanese vinyl, looking at the advantages of each and how they affect the finished print. We will experiment with both water based and oil based inks, as well as a selection of print papers and surfaces, allowing you to understand how different combinations produce different results.
You will learn how to transfer designs, carve plates safely and effectively, and how to register print plates so that images align accurately. We will explore layering and reduction printmaking techniques to create colourful, multi layered prints, and will also touch on the use of chine collé as a way of introducing colour and texture into prints. The day will culminate in the creation of a small selection of motifs which can be combined to produce a themed linocut print, with guidance and support throughout.
Exploring Print Plates: Compare traditional lino, soft cut lino and Japanese vinyl, understanding the strengths of each.
Inks and Surfaces: Experiment with both water based and oil based inks on a range of papers and surfaces.
Carving and Tools: Learn how to use cutting tools safely to create a variety of marks and textures.
Layering and Reduction: Understand how to register plates and build colour through layered and reduction printmaking techniques.
Chine Collé: Explore the use of chine collé to introduce colour and surface variation.
Motif Development: Create a selection of motifs and combine them to produce a cohesive themed print.
Suitable for ages 16+
Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon but lunch is not provided. There is a cafe on site, and The Drum pub is within a short walk from the studio, or feel free to bring a packed lunch.
No experience necessary. This workshop is perfect for beginners.
Please bring old clothes or an apron - painting can get messy!
Long stay parking is available a short walk from the studio (Craft Centre Car Park: Open 7am – 7pm, parking charges apply)

Textiles is a versatile medium, great for creating artwork as well as embellishing home furnishings and clothing. In this workshop you will learn to use appliqué, basic embroidery stitches and beading to create your own decorative fabric cupcake illustration.

Pointillism in Acrylics

Pointillism is defined by its use of mark making and colour. Pointillism paintings are created from hundreds of dots of carefully placed pure colours, relying on the eye to mix the colours to achieve maximum luminosity, in a similar way to pixels on a screen.
Learn how to use reds, blues and yellows to create the whole spectrum of colours. In this workshop we will look at basic colour theory, pigment strength and colour mixing before going on to create a colourful acrylic painting to take away with you.

Get started with Oil Paints

Starting out with Oils can be a daunting prospect, but with just a few basics you can unlock the potential of this rich and exciting medium.
In this beginners workshop we will be getting to grips with oil painting. You will gain understanding of the paints, learn about colour mixing and basic application techniques, and receive step-by-step guidance in creating your own still life painting.

Mastering Reflections | Large Scale Charcoal Drawing

In this workshop we will be getting messy with large-scale charcoal drawings.
Working at A1 in scale we will be looking at reflection and the refraction of light on glass as well studying the way in which glass objects interact with positive and negative space.
