Oils | Mark Making & Brushwork
@ Cockington Court, Torquay
Sunday 22nd February 11:00 - 16:30
Full Day
£79
This full day workshop takes place at the beautiful Cockington Court in Torquay and is suitable for beginners and improvers. The course focuses on expressive mark making and brushwork through an abstract approach, allowing you to explore paint freely without the pressure of creating a realistic image.

Working with a combination of acrylics and oil paints, the day will begin with a series of guided paint along exercises exploring a range of mark making techniques. Acrylic paint will be used in the early stages to build fast drying layers, texture and underpainting, before moving into oil paint to develop richer surface qualities and more considered brushwork. You will experiment with different tools including brushes, palette knives and improvised tools, and will explore techniques such as dry brushing, scumbling, broken colour and layering.

By working abstractly, you will be encouraged to focus on how paint behaves, how marks interact, and how variation in pressure, speed and direction can create movement, depth and atmosphere. In the afternoon, you will combine the techniques explored to create a larger scale abstract painting, receiving individual guidance and support throughout the process. All materials are provided.
Course Highlights
Abstract Exploration: Work abstractly to remove pressure and focus fully on brushwork, mark making and the behaviour of paint.

Layering Acrylics and Oils: Learn how to combine fast drying acrylic layers with oil paint to build depth, texture and surface interest.
Mark Making Techniques: Explore a wide range of marks using brushes, palette knives and alternative tools.

Paint Handling: Develop an understanding of how pressure, speed and direction affect the quality and character of marks.

Texture and Surface: Experiment with techniques such as dry brushing, scumbling and broken colour to create movement and atmosphere.

Large Scale Painting: Bring techniques together to create a larger abstract painting with individual guidance and support.

Pointillism in Acrylics
Sun, 18 August, 13:30 – 16:30
The Court Street Gallery, Trowbridge
Pointillism is defined by its use of mark making and colour. Pointillism paintings are created from hundreds of dots of carefully placed pure colours, relying on the eye to mix the colours to achieve maximum luminosity, in a similar way to pixels on a screen.
Learn how to use reds, blues and yellows to create the whole spectrum of colours. In this workshop we will look at basic colour theory, pigment strength and colour mixing before going on to create a colourful acrylic painting to take away with you.
