Watercolours | Pen & Wash
@ Cockington Court, Torquay Sunday 20th September, 11:00 - 16:30 Full Day £79
This full day workshop takes place at the beautiful Cockington Court in Torquay and is suitable for beginners and improvers. It offers an engaging introduction to the combined use of ink drawing and watercolour, exploring how line and colour can work together to create expressive, characterful artwork.
You will begin the day working with dip pens, exploring a series of drawing exercises designed to build confidence and fluency with line. We will look at continuous line drawing, line quality and varied mark making, discovering how different nibs, pressure and pacing affect the character of your marks.
Alongside this, you will be introduced to key watercolour techniques, learning how transparent washes can be layered with ink to add depth, tone and atmosphere. We will explore when to apply ink before or after paint, and how the two mediums interact on the page.
As the day progresses, you will combine these approaches to develop a finished pen and wash artwork, bringing together drawing and painting techniques in a cohesive piece. Guidance and demonstrations will be provided throughout, making this workshop a supportive and enjoyable way to expand your skills. All materials are provided.
Course Highlights
Dip Pen Foundations: Learn how to use dip pens, inks and nibs with confidence.
Continuous Line Drawing: Build fluency and observation through uninterrupted line work.
Line Quality: Explore variation in pressure, rhythm and pacing.
Expressive Mark Making: Use line to suggest texture, form and movement.
Watercolour Techniques: Develop washes, layering and tonal control.
Ink and Paint Integration: Learn how watercolour and ink interact on the page.
Sequencing Methods: Explore working ink first versus paint first.
Resolved Artwork: Create a finished pen and wash piece combining both mediums.
