Acrylics | Exploring Underpainting
@ The Court Street Gallery, Trowbridge
Monday 7th September, 18:30-21:30
Evening
£49
This workshop is suitable for beginners and improvers. The course offers a practical introduction to underpainting techniques and how they can be used to strengthen colour, structure and depth within an acrylic painting.

Working step by step, you will learn how to build a painting from the ground up, beginning with tonal underlayers that establish composition, values and form before developing colour on top. We will explore how underpainting can unify a piece, influence mood and help guide later brushwork.

Throughout the evening, you will be guided through a series of structured exercises designed to demonstrate different approaches to underpainting, from monochromatic tonal studies to more expressive colour grounds. You will then apply these techniques to create a resolved painting, gaining confidence in layering, glazing and colour development.

This workshop is ideal if you would like to better understand how to construct a painting and bring greater depth and cohesion to your work. All materials are provided.
Course Highlights
Underpainting Foundations: Learn what underpainting is and how it supports the painting process.

Tonal Groundwork: Use monochrome layers to establish value, light and structure.

Colour Grounds: Explore how coloured underlayers influence the final painting.

Layering and Glazing: Build colour gradually to create richness and depth.

Composition Planning: Understand how underpainting helps organise form and balance.

Brushwork Development: Use early layers to guide later marks and detail.

Resolved Painting: Create a finished acrylic painting using underpainting techniques.

Pointillism in Acrylics
Sun, 18 August, 13:30 – 16:30
The Court Street Gallery, Trowbridge
Pointillism is defined by its use of mark making and colour. Pointillism paintings are created from hundreds of dots of carefully placed pure colours, relying on the eye to mix the colours to achieve maximum luminosity, in a similar way to pixels on a screen.
Learn how to use reds, blues and yellows to create the whole spectrum of colours. In this workshop we will look at basic colour theory, pigment strength and colour mixing before going on to create a colourful acrylic painting to take away with you.
